How to get your business to show up on Google Maps

When someone in Richmond searches "coffee shop near me" or "HVAC repair Henrico," Google shows a map with three businesses under it. Those three spots — the local 3-pack — get the overwhelming majority of clicks and calls. Here's how to earn your way in, step by step.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and claim your listing (or create one if it doesn't exist). Google will verify you by postcard, phone, or video depending on your business type. This is free and takes ten minutes to start. Nothing else on this list works until it's done.

Step 2: Choose your categories carefully

Your primary category is the single strongest signal you control. Be specific: "Italian restaurant" beats "restaurant," "roofing contractor" beats "contractor." Add every legitimately applicable secondary category — but only ones you'd genuinely serve customers under.

Step 3: Complete every single field

Hours, phone, website, services, service area, description, attributes, opening date — all of it. Google rewards complete profiles, and customers trust them more. Use your real local phone number, not a call-tracking number that doesn't match your website.

Step 4: Keep your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Google cross-references your listing against Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, Facebook, and dozens of directories. Inconsistencies — "St." vs "Street," an old phone number on Yelp — erode trust. Audit your listings and fix mismatches.

Step 5: Get reviews, systematically

Reviews are the biggest ongoing ranking factor — and the biggest conversion factor, since people read them before choosing. Don't leave it to chance: ask every happy customer, ideally by text with your direct review link (find it in your GBP dashboard under "Ask for reviews"). Reply to every review, good and bad — Google notices, and so do future customers.

Never buy reviews or review-swap. Google's detection is good and getting better, and a review penalty can suppress your listing for months. Slow and real beats fast and fake.

Step 6: Add photos and post regularly

Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks and direction requests. Add real photos — your storefront, your team, your work — and refresh them monthly. Use Google Posts for offers and updates; it signals an active business.

Step 7: Link a strong website

Your website backs up your profile. A fast, mobile-friendly site with your city and services clearly on the page strengthens everything above. A slow template site — or no site — is a handbrake on your rankings. (This is where local SEO and web design stop being separate projects and start being one system.)

Mistakes that keep Richmond businesses out of the 3-pack

  • Keyword-stuffing the business name. "Smith Plumbing — Best Plumber Richmond VA 24/7" violates Google's rules and risks suspension. Use your real name.
  • A P.O. box or virtual office address. Google verifies real locations. Service-area businesses should hide their address and set a service area instead.
  • Ignoring the Q&A section. Anyone can post questions on your profile — and anyone can answer them. Answer them yourself before a stranger does.
  • Letting hours go stale. Wrong holiday hours generate angry reviews, and Google demotes profiles it suspects are unmaintained.
  • Creating a duplicate listing instead of claiming the existing one. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google. Always search for your business first.

What to expect

Your profile shows up within days of verification. Competitive rankings take longer: expect 2–4 months of consistent work to crack the 3-pack for meaningful searches in the Richmond market, depending on your competition. It compounds — every review, photo, and consistent citation makes the next month easier.
